Each day in the UK, approximately 98 million cups of coffee are consumed [1], with AO.com discovering that one in four out of 2000 adults surveyed would opt for a latte as their choice of drink [2]that’s a choice we can get on board with!

Whether the milky treat kicks off the working day at 9:01am (the average time for the first cup of coffee [3]) or is enjoyed later in the day as an afternoon pick-me-up, there is no denying that the smooth and milky delight is loved by many across the globe.

But what exactly is a latte?

A latte is a milky coffee, usually made up of one or two shots of espresso, steamed milk and a final thin layer of frothed milk on top – but that’s just in the UK! If your colleagues visit Italy during their annual leave, be sure to let them know that they should ask for a ‘latte macchiato’ in order to enjoy what they’re used to [4]. Otherwise, they’ll be sipping on just a glass of warm milk!

Did you know? Americans visiting Italy found the bitter and rich flavours of coffee too overpowering. As a result, warm milk was added to create a sweeter, more balanced and palatable drink for tourists [5].

A crowd pleaser…

The mix of coffee with creamy frothed milk makes the latte a popular option for regular coffee drinkers, as well as those who opt for a caffeine kick every now and again – the beloved latte is the perfect crowd pleaser and a fantastic perk in any workplace, meaning colleagues wouldn’t need to travel to or spend money in coffee shops on their breaks.
