Around the world in a cup of tea

CHINA

In China, drinking tea is taken extremely seriously and their traditional tea ceremony is a very detailed process. Before drinking, you are expected to take in the aromas of the tea then cradling the cup in both hands, sip the tea slowly to savour the flavour not letting go of the cup until finished.2

RUSSIA

The fifth biggest tea consumer in the world, Russia are serious about their love of tea! Sweet tea is top of the menu with “brickettes” of sugar being nibbled as the tea is drunk or dunked into the cup instead of being dissolved fully in the tea. Alternatively, jam can also be stirred into tea to give it a fruitier kick.3

TURKEY

Did you know that Turkey is the world’s greatest consumer of tea with a good cuppa being the country’s most popular hot drink?4  In Turkey, tea is drunk strong and black and sharing a good cup of tea is seen as a sign of friendship – with a pot of tea always ready for thirsty guests in homes and workplaces.5

JAPAN

Green tea is the drink of choice in Japan, with tea being the most popular drink.6  In fact it’s so popular that there is an entire day dedicated to their love of green tea! This is celebrated on the first day of spring when the tea leaves are at their freshest and are believed to bring luck to the drinkers.7

POLAND

In Poland, tea is preferred with a little more zest! A typical cup of tea is usually served black and finished with lemon and sugar and can be drunk throughout the day. Or if looking for a tea with a kick, a Herbata z prądem or “tea with electricity” can be brewed with the addition of alcohol!8

MOROCCO

In Morocco, a tea is made from mint and green tea leaves are blended together with sugar. The tea is then served three times over with the flavour varying slightly each time. It is said “The first glass is as gentle as life, the second is as strong as love, the third is as bitter as death.”2

USA

In the USA tea is mostly drank black with 75-80% of tea consumed over ice.9  Iced tea was made popular following the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis when due to the hot summer weather people shunned hot tea in favour of cold, making ice tea a firm favourite with American consumers.10
